Me Made May: Days 23-30

Thursday, May 23

Top: Sewaholic Alma (new!)
Bottom: refashioned khaki shirt (my first repeat - drat.)

I've been focusing on adding more separates to my wardrobe, and separates in solid colors are in high demand.  Since the Alma pattern was languishing in my stash, I decided to use some stash black poly to make a blouse.

I even used a black separating zipper I had on hand to complete the piece! While the pattern calls for a non-separating zipper, I am focusing on using as much of my stash as possible.

Friday, May 24: FURNITURE!

Friends, this long awaited day was greeted in an outfit that was fit for carrying the final additions to my apartment up four flights of stairs:

One of the new pieces: a dressing screen.  Stephy and I have big plans for that.

After the moving of the furniture and a trip to Home Depot and JoAnn's (got new couch cushion foam at JoAnn's - HALF OFF.  Thank goodness because it was originally priced at $60 a yard - seriously?! No way, man), we went back to Stephy's where I caught up on Doctor Who...

and played with kitties.

*sidenote on Doctor Who - I starting sobbing 15 minutes into the finale and DID. NOT. STOP.*

Afterwards, we journeyed to 80's night, where good times were had by all:

Top: Simplicity 1879
Bottoms: still the jean shorts - classy

While the shorts were a good idea for dancing, they were not the best for riding on the back of a motorcycle home. (Yes, Mom - I was totally wearing a helmet).  My knees were a bit chilled once I arrived back at Casa de Grand (name is pending. Suggestions welcome!)

Saturday, May 25

Sadly, today was a day of saying goodbye to my friend Travis, seen in the picture above.  He's off doing fantastic theater work in Ohio for the Summer, so we all showed up for a send off:

Dress: The Ascot Challenge Dress

(this is Molly. I like Molly.)

Taken the next morning.  I fell asleep on a couch. Don't judge me.

I wore non-me-made leggings and cardigan because IT WAS JUST SO COLD.  I like how it looks, though - and may be trying out this look once Autumn rolls around again.

Sunday, May 25: Painting

I actually have a me-made outfit for painting

Top: A really hideous pink Renfrew, made out of the worst knit ever. I wanted to throw it away, but it's perfect for sloppy things like this.
Pants: Occupants

The tenant before me had painted two of the walls blue, and my best friend, Stephy, and I finished the other two walls.  It looks amazing now!

Monday, May 27:

Blouse: McCalls 5929
Overalls: Eva Dress Land Girls Overalls

Friends, I knew today was going to be crazy so I threw on my overalls and got to work. I put a second coat of paint on the walls, made curtains for my bedroom, washed the couch cushion covers and restuffed them, went to the grocery, reorganized my bathroom and kitchen cupboards, etc etc etc.

I was feeling very productive by the time this picture was taken.

Tuesday, May 28

Top: McCalls 5522
Skirt: Refashioned khaki skirt (I can't help repeating it, I love it so much)

I didn't want to stand still for pictures, so here is a picture of me admiring my shoes.

Wednesday, May 29: BLACKHAWKS

For those of you that follow me on Twitter, let me offer my most sincere apologies for Wednesday night.  I should not be allowed to live tweet during sporting events.  With that said, I spent my evening with my best friend and her husband watching the Chicago Blackhawks v the Detroit Red Wings.  If you were watching the game, then you know it was a nail biter.

Top: Perfectly Plaid Pendrell
Bottoms: Black Simplicity 3688

According to my friend, Tyler, this is my "famous 'I can't handle the stress' sports watching face. Non-Steeler version. Btw, you can tell it isn't a Steeler game because J. isn't wincing in pain from Megan's fingers digging into his leg."  These people know my sports watching habits to a T.

Thursday, May 30

Since I got home late after the game ended last night, my outfit today was rather uninspired:

Top: Refashioned white dress top (another repeat)

Since posting about this skirt originally, I threw it into a black dye bath.  While the color is darker overall and hides the weird blue issues I gained from the seam tape, it did leave black spots in places.  I still wear it because it's comfortable, though I know I'll work to replace it soon.

Friends, I am proud that I am nearing the end of this challenge without many repeats.  I'd like to approach the next me made challenge with a goal of no repeats, but for now, I think I have definitely satisfied the goal of wearing me made items this month :)

Have a marvelous night, all!  One more day to go!

Me Made May: Days 17 - 22 and ... another challenge?!

Darlings! I have returned from a me made adventure in South Carolina! It was nice to get away from Chicago for a little while and seek out some warmer weather :)
Friday, May 17:

The day before I left and I needed something comfortable to work in.  Why is it always the day before vacation when everything seems to be on fire?!

Saturday, May 18

After the hectic work day on Friday, it's not really surprising that I was ready for a bottle of wine and a dozen Krispy Kreme donuts once I met up with my parents.  (HOT AND FRESH, YOU GUYS.  HOT AND FRESH.  In that state, they are like puffs of air and thus, have no calories.  Consume quickly without repercussions.)

(Sad story: That wine was still unconsumed by the time I returned to Chicago.  Those donuts were long gone, however.)

Playing cards into the wee hours of the morning.  Aren't my parents adorable? Mom's got her sassy face on because she is schooling us in Rummy.

Sunday, May 19

PJs!  No, seriously - I'm trying to wear me made PJs as well.  This hasn't been the easiest, but the below is my standard attire:

Top: knit Sorbetto

Check out that pasty whiteness!  MEOW.

Only my father would have a hat that says "I may grow old, but I refuse to grow up."

We enjoyed our first coffee on our balcony ...

...but hark!  A storm approaches!

It rained every. single. day.

Since we couldn't make it to the beach in between storms, we found other ways to entertain ourselves ... like taking epic pictures

We also developed a new appreciation for foods that were stuffed with other foods and then wrapped in bacon.

Mama Grand and I did not realize that we matched our beverages until after this picture was taken.

Dad matched his as well.  We are very matchy-matchy.

Monday, May 20

My parents started covering their faces every time I pulled out the camera...

... so I stole their pose.

Tuesday, May 21

Dress: Colette Macaron (first worn during Chicago meet-up)

Only hours before I am due to return home, the rain let up and we were able to go to the beach.  FINALLY.

Wednesday, May 22:

I spent most of this evening cutting out dresses that would be perfect for summer.  I am hoping that we eventually get warmer weather to stay for more than a few days at a time!

Now that Me Made May is winding down, it's time to start thinking about new challenges!  This particular challenge I am focusing on is being organized by the uber wonderful Meli over at Codos on the Windowsills.  Do you have closet orphans that need a little TLC to make them wearable?  Or pieces that just need some tweaking before they become wardrobe staples?  If so, then this challenge is definitely for you :)  Check out Meli's blog on Friday when she lists all the fabulous details.  I'm all for fixing up what I've made!  Won't you join me in following along?

Have a marvelous evening, all!

Me Made May: Days 14 - 16

Wooooo!  We've reached mid-May with no outfits repeated yet.  I'm trying to hold out as long as possible! (Many thanks to the most lovely Maddie for the shout out in her Sewing News - I heart your face!!)
Tuesday, May 14

Friends, the warmer weather is returning, so I celebrated by pulling a sleeveless blouse out of the closet:

Lizzie wanted to see my "grr" face.

I switched to shorts later (these specifically), perfect for sharing lemonade on my back porch with a gentleman caller ... and then cuddling with puppies.

Wednesday, May 15

I wore my favorite dress in the whole world: The Sassy Secretary Dress.  (Lisette, I will always love you for releasing this pattern into my greedy hands)

Thursday, May 16

Sunshine breaks are important ... especially if you are super pale and planning on going to the beach in the near future.

This is my photographer, Lizzie.  I love her like whoa.

The dress is the Couch of the Irish - a favorite in my closet and so comfortable!

I'll be off on an adventure for a wee bit, but I've got a me made wardrobe ready for whatever lies ahead :)  Chat with all of you lovelies soon!

Me Made May: Days 8-13

Friends, it's been an epic May so far!

Wednesday, May 8:

A complete Colette outfit!

My Lizzie and I celebrated the warm weather by taking photos outside, which was rather enjoyable ... especially when Lizzie is shouting commands at me.  POSE.  SMILE.  STAND UP STRAIGHT.

I can't keep my eyes open because I'm laughing so hard.

Thursday, May 9

I decided to combine two rarely worn items and I rather like how they came together!

Laughing. So. Hard.

Posing because the photographer demanded it.

Thursday night:

This dress.  No photos exist because I was soaked through by the time I got home - whoops!

Friday, May 10

There is no explanation for this face other than it was incredibly cold and I would not put down the pashmina.

 Friday night:

Friends, it has been an incredibly long time since I went out on a date.  On Wednesday, I panicked and emailed the darling Michelle and begged for help on choosing what to wear.  She advised me to be comfortable and wear something red.  She suggested these two dresses: the Most Comfortable Dress Ever and the Love Story Dress.

I followed her guidance to a T.  I made Simplicity 2369 with some leftover red polka dot knit in my stash.

It was a complete win.

This dress was perfect for drinks and dancing, and I do believe my date liked it as well :)

Saturday, May 11

Saturday night found me at a housewarming/birthday party in my favorite Sailor pants.

It also found me on the floor with my girlfriends singing Bohemian Rhapsody.

Sunday, May 12

Bottoms: Cut off and many times repaired sweatpants

It ain't pretty, but it's practical for carrying laundry up and down the back stairs.

Monday, May 13

Pants: Simplicity 3688 (new)

Oh, look!  Another pair of 3688 pants!

(and my bestie's knees.  Hi Stephy!)

I love this pattern so much.  I'm definitely seeing a plaid version happening in the somewhat near future.

Thirteen days in and no repeats yet!  I'm hoping to complete the whole month with fresh outfits everyday, but we'll see how I'm feeling once the end of the month rolls around :)

Have a marvelous night, all!

Me Made May: Day 7 or "Stripes"

Friends, it's confession time.  This is actually the third pair of trousers I've made from Simplicity 3688, but the first pair to be featured on the blog.  I wear the others regularly, but have just never had a chance to take pictures.  As you can see from the below photo evidence, I am adjusting to the reality of using a timer. (It's not so bad, and besides, it's like giving you a mini-tour of my new digs!)

Back to the trousers...

I had fallen for this pattern when I made this blouse (originally seen here), but once I made the trousers, I was hooked.  The darts allow for a fantastic fit, the legs are perfectly wide for some fabulous swishing when I walk, and the high waist fits without any adjustment whatsoever.  An all around win, if I do say so myself.

I don't know how I made it so long without having a set of black trousers in my wardrobe, but these fill a HUGE gap.  Next up: a black pencil skirt to fill another chasm in my closet.

After that, who knows? Whatever I like, I suppose :)

Have a marvelous night, all!

PS. You can see rocks attached to my walls in the top two photos.  Yes, those are rocks.  I have no idea how they got there, nor does the girl that lived here before me.  The aren't part of the wall - they are hung like art.  Totally quirky, right?
