Daily Action: Post a Positive Review on Yelp/TripAdvisor/Etc.

Friends, it's been a minute, hasn't it? I confess that I got a little overwhelmed, depressed, and burnt out since we last chatted, and that hasn't changed much. If anything, the news of Justice Kennedy's retirement has sent me further down the rabbit hole of despair, which was already pretty deep due to the separation of families along our southern border.

So here I am, thinking, "There must be something I can do." And there is. There are lots of things we can do.

Besides sending money to RAICES, or protesting ICE facilities near you, or sharing information about a local Nazi who owns a popular nightclub in your city, you can write a review of a place in your area that you love. Bonus points if it's a small business that is women/POC/LGBTQ owned.

"But Meg, why would I do that?" I went to see a man today to get some jewelry appraised. The man was a consummate professional, took the time to explain why he thought certain items would be worth more (clarity of gems, karats of gold), or why the scrap might be worth more than the piece as a whole, and did not charge me a cent for the time he spent with me. He explained that he was genuinely tired of seeing people ripped off because they didn't have the knowledge about gems or metals that he did. I found this man because he had 110 5 star reviews on Yelp. His honesty and service, and his commitment to serving the community and those who were in need of guidance, was definitely worth a 5 star review to me.

Today, think of the small businesses in your area that you regularly frequent. Is there a sewing machine shop who has done great work on your machines? Is there a corner grocery store that always has great produce and helpful employees? Does your favorite restaurant have that one dessert dish that is not to be missed? We've talked before about updating Yelp when a place has gender neutral restrooms - this would just be going a step further and saying, "Hey. This place is great. Go here if you want amazing ice cream."

Take care of yourselves and each other.

XOXO,

Meg
