Sew Weekly Challenge: Down Under or "The Rollicking, Frolicking, All Around Good Time Dress"

Friends, it has been chilly here. I mean, it's still above zero degrees Fahrenheit with the wind chill, so really, I cannot complain... but it's still too chilly for my summery red dress. (The weird faces are me trying to make Rob catch the clouds of air coming out of my mouth. As you can tell, it didn't work and I look rather like a large mouth bass... or the muppet named Janice.)

The full post is over at the Sew Weekly, but there were many photos that weren't included there, including this one of me trying to cover as much of myself as possible while laughing at the enormously fat pigeons perched on the park wall. I had thought they were chickens at first, but then I realized that chickens cannot fly and I doubted that someone put them in the building's park or I was seeing a miracle of nature.

I love the print of this fabric. The little yellow, blue, and white flowers really say summer to me, and I wanted to emphasize my longing for sunshine by adding a little yellow embroidery to the neckline.

Lots of frolicking happened during the photo shoot. Don't be fooled - it was all to generate warmth.

I love the silhouette of the dress, though I'm wishing I had made the hem a bit longer. Right now, it feels like it is a good length for day time activities, but maybe not for a more-than-casual nighttime outing.

Off and running, folks. Many photos taken were of me fleeing to a new photo location in order to speed this process along.

I love nature, especially when it blocks the wind. Oh hi, Navy Pier!

The final pose I tried out, because after holding onto metal bars, I was thoroughly finished and frozen. Popsicles in red dresses are not sexy. This is a fact.

Friends, are you sewing for the warmer weather?? I feel like everything I have made recently would be better used during summer, but I cannot deny my desire for sunshine and humidity. How are you coping with the chill in the air??

Sew Grateful: Chicago Social Sewing

Friends, I've been wanting to participate in the lovely Debi's Sew Grateful event for some time. While I know it's still a week away, I wanted to share with you this fabulous sewing event I hosted this past weekend.

As you know from this post, I recently hosted a free sewing class in my apartment for anyone who wanted to learn how to sew buttons. I am so grateful to have learned this incredible skill and I wanted to share my passion with anyone who wanted to learn. The response was astounding: 12 people showed up for an afternoon of food, laughter, and learning. It was an honor to have them all in my home and be able to teach them something I love so dearly.

The Sewing Class or How I let My Boyfriend Guest Post

Hello, folks. The Aldi Cook here, writing a guest blog for you numerous fans of Meg the Grand. You may ask yourself why is someone whose blog has nothing to do with sewing writing a guest post here. You would be right to do so. I do not sew. I once reattached a button with duct tape. Yeah, I'm that guy. Megan, however, recently hosted a sewing class which taught, of all things, how to sew buttons. As she was busy teaching the class, I documented the thing for the purpose of putting it on the internets. As her boyfriend, I also have unlimited access to her and can wait until she is drunk to get her to agree to things like this. (Meg here: this sentence sounds totally wrong. TOTALLY WRONG.) Everybody wins. So, without further ado, I present Megan's Sewing Class Wonderment With Unicorns:

The event started with us waiting for everyone to get there. Traffic was awful, so not everyone showed up at the same time. When they did show up, they had food or booze or both. It was a good way to get things started. (Homemade tamales seen below from here: AMAZING.)

There was fruit, chocolate, cheese, sausage, mini cinnamon rolls, tamales, and champagne. Some people got the idea to add some of the fruit to their champagne.(That would be me. Totally guilty.)

I decided to class up the joint even more. (*sigh*)

Eventually the majority of people coming to the class showed up, so Megan starts to explain how things were going to work, where people should sit, where to get the samplers, needles, threads, and buttons, and all the things that people who have been drinking and socializing will immediately listen to.

Megan missed her calling as a teacher, because everyone falls in line and starts preparing for the class. Between drinking and documenting, I miss most of the instructions. (This is typical Rob behavior. Do not be fooled.)

Luckily I know the teacher, and I am soon set straight. Megan explains that we will be sewing 2 hole, 4 hole, shank, and covered buttons. We will also be sewing snaps. She gives instructions on how to thread a needle, and how to knot the thread. I pick up an already threaded needle because I do not suffer from masochism. (OF ALL THE PEOPLE WHO NEEDED TO LEARN...ugh.)

We begin with the 2 hole buttons. I have had a few beers/am an idiot, so I have a few problems, but nothing our teacher doesn't patiently address.

The girl next to me, let's call her Shelley (because that's her name), is overly competitive and uses my camera to take pictures of her oh-so-perfect button.

She then turns the camera on me to document my continued struggle.

I have another beer. Through inattentiveness/drunkenness/stupidity I have managed to sew a potato chip to my sampler. (Teacher is not pleased. Potato chips do not belong on samplers. They belong in French Onion dip - FACT.)

Megan is not pleased. I shank my potato chip (I never thought I would ever type that sentence...again). We continue through 4 hole and shank buttons with Megan providing explanations and solutions to the common problems of unexplained knots, running out of thread mid button, etc. Everyone is having a wonderful time. When we get to covered buttons the class is amazed. I am told I cannot use Megan's button kit to create a deli ham covered button. (I mean, seriously?) My dreams of a ham and swiss coat die before they can become a tasty reality. When we are done with the many inappropriate jokes about the male/female parts of the snaps, Shelley's sampler looks much better than mine.

I make a decisive move to eliminate the evidence of my failure.

The class was a huge success. I feel that I can competently sew buttons now. There was much talk about when the next class would be (hems y'all). I must say, Megan is a very good, and let's face it, patient teacher. Thanks to her, I now know how to sew snack foods onto fabric. I can also sew a button, but since I do live with this redheaded seamstress, I will probably allow her to continue the sewing in our relationship.

(There are just no words. Don't drink and agree to things, Friends - take my advice on this one.)

And finally...

We have a big problem: Vogue Patterns released their 2012 designs, and my wallet looked at me in a panic.

Vogue 1296 was the first thing I saw in my inbox when I got up this morning. This image prompted me to get out of bed and rush to my computer for a closer look. That neckline is a beauty! I'm not much for peplums, but wow, I would totally love to make this and wear it everywhere.

Vogue 1285 is a beauty. A simple dress with clean, classic lines and this fabulous little addition : "Lining forms attached slip with shoulder and lingerie straps." I would need to make the hem a bit longer, but mock wrap dresses go pretty far in my closet.

I only have one issue with Vogue 1281: You never see a picture of the dress on the model while she is just facing forward and standing still. You get the best idea of this dress from the detail sketch below the images. With that said, it's a beautiful dress. The description: "Dress has no side seams, very close-fitting, lined bodice, single-layer, pleated shoulder strap looped through front pleated drape, front wrap skirt cut-in-one with back, raised waist, and invisible back zipper." That sounds complicated ... I like it!

While we already have a mock wrap dress above, the collection does include an actual wrap dress: Vogue 8784. This pattern includes two options for the skirt: an A-line and a semi-fitted pleated skirt. I don't recall seeing many wrap dress patterns that have included a semi-fitted option, but I am all for this choice - it would definitely add to the corporate wardrobe I have assembled in my closet.

Vogue 1282 is a top/skirt combo, with some lovely draping details on the top. I love the skirt - it seems to emphasize curves and has one scandalous slit. It's on the maybe list, as there might not be enough occasions to wear this, but I still love the idea of it.

Vogue 1280 is pretty fabulous in terms of construction. Look at those bands of fabric! Shoulder straps, insets, AND overlapped seam detail. Tres chic, y'all.

I love this blouse, Vogue 8790. I would make this with all the leftover spandex from my Little Mermaid running costume. It would be totally amazing and shiny.

Onto the Vintage Vogue patterns: I found it slightly disappointing that they did not include the artist renderings of the original designs, but that's just me.

Vogue 8788 is a back wrap dress (my, we have so many different varieties of wrap dresses here - I LOVE IT) and reminds me of the Butterick 4790. What do you think?

The other Vintage Vogue pattern is Vogue 8789. It's a lovely dress in this print, and I love the contrast cummerbund, but doesn't it seem a little ... simple (construction wise)? I guess when I see a Vogue pattern, I automatically assume there is going to be some degree of hair pulling, and this looks deceptively easy. I almost want to try just to confirm my suspicions.

Sew Weekly Challenge: Make This Look or the "At Last" Blouse

Friends, so far this year I have used the Colette Patterns Taffy and Ceylon. Why quit while I'm ahead? For this challenge, I finally settled on making a luscious Jasmine blouse (and by finally settled, I mean that this was the third project I had attempted for this challenge. You'll get to see the failures later this week).

My "Make This Look" inspiration was none other than fashionista Sarai, whose amazing polka dot Jasmine made me long for a navy blue one of my very own.

The shirt was made with navy polyester from my stash - it has the perfect amount of drape for this pattern, I think. I wore this ensemble to work today - the skirt is from a refashion seen here. It's always nice to find an outfit that fits corporate America's standards while letting me flex my sewing muscle.

While I really love the look of this blouse, I definitely am having issues with the facings. They keep popping up even though I've tacked them down in spots. It makes the shirt sit a little oddly, but I'm hoping with some ironing and washing it will relax a little.

It's a fabulous, versatile piece - perfect for work or play - and I can see myself making several of these in the future in all colors (and by all colors, I mean various shades of orange).

Friends, I know some of you have tried the Jasmine blouse pattern. Any further recommendations on making the facings lay flat? If you would let me know, I would greatly appreciate it!

Coke vs Pepsi: The Ultimate Fashion Showdown

Friends, I've been on a real refashioning kick lately. I finally got the chance to tackle one of my most favorite pieces ever: Mama Grand's Coca Cola Sweatshirt.

No, seriously. It says Coca-Cola right there.

I absolutely love that it is a mix of cartography and cola, and I've been WAITING for Mama G to say I could have it. Once it was in my greedy little paws, the ideas began. Shall I make into a skirt? A hoodie? When I told Mama G of all my ideas, she gasped. Obviously she was not a fan of my completely refashioning her shirt. I decided to stick with it as a sweatshirt but with some alterations. Both parties were pleased with this idea.

And then this dude walked in. (No, seriously. It says Pepsi. He's owned this for at least twenty years.)

I was all like HELL NO. We are not going to the grocery all matchy matchy. I am Queen Supreme, zero calories and refreshing flavor. Rob was all, my sweater is more awesomesauce and I am not clear anymore so that makes me better. " I am Coke Zero." " I am Pepsi One."

(Wasn't the clear stuff nasty? I mean, really...what was Pepsi thinking?)

Eventually I won, with my new fabulous gathered sleeves and taken-in sides. (No, Rob, I will not gather your sleeves.) And by winning I mean I didn't have to carry the bag with the milk AND the orange juice. It's the little things, really.

Friends, please help settle this matter once and for all with your comments! Whoever loses has to make dinner this weekend, so please help this recipe challenged girl out and say that Coke totally beats Pepsi, hands down :)

Sew Weekly Challenge: Buttons or "How Green Was My Button" Dress

Friends, when I first saw this challenge come across the screen, I knew exactly what I wanted to try: Colette Patterns Ceylon Dress. I bought the dress pattern months ago knowing it would eventually need to be made and my fear of buttonholes conquered. I also knew that this challenge would be the perfect chance to try my hand at this tutorial I found via Pinterest. I was so excited to see that I could dye buttons! I, for one, must have at least 100 white mismatched buttons that could easily be dyed. I was pumped.

(Pardon the face. My skin was sticking to the ice cold metal pole I was leaning against.)

My main issue with dyeing buttons is that I needed to use almost an entire bottle of Rit Forest Green liquid dye to dye 16 buttons. These went into a dye bath four times, and yet, are mossy and not dark at all. I was originally working for these buttons to match the piping on the dress, but it was not meant to be. I would say that the buttons are the only thing I am disappointed about in regards to this dress.

Aside from the mossy bits of sadness, I LOVE this dress. I was not really crazy about it until I tried it on - and then I was oh so pleasantly surprised by how flattering the cut was, how great the neckline lays, and how the sleeves have just the right amount of Anne of Green Gables puff to them.

This dress took about 14 hours to make. I took my time, which is quite amazing, considering how impatient I am in real life. I flat lined each piece with a white bed sheet, I basted piping onto the un-interfaced pieces before sewing the seam, and I even hand stitched the hem. I so desperately wanted for this dress to turn out like I had imagined, and I worked slowly with that goal in mind.

The piping might be one of my favorite parts of the whole dress. While I was working, I remembered this dress I had made some time ago, and how the dress (green shamrocks on white background) needed a little oomph. Noticing the similarities in fabric between that dress and this Ceylon, I knew that I needed piping in order to make the fabric pop and not let my skin get completely washed out by the white background.

I could not be more pleased by the final version of this dress! I recommend this pattern for anyone who is looking for a challenge and is willing to take their time. The steps were clear and easy - there were just more of these than usual!

I apologize for the photos - the best ones seem to be from the elevator ride in our building. My kind photographer stood on the rails to take these pictures. I thought for sure he would bust his head on the ceiling, but he came out relatively unscathed.

Why no photos outside, you ask?

While it's called the "Windy City" for political reasons, it is totally weather appropriate for 360 days out of the year.

The Great Aunt Refashions: Tee Shirt Tutorial

Friends, on my most recent trip home for the holidays, I was alerted to the presence of a bag sitting in the bottom of my old bedroom closet. I opened the bag to find some fabulous items of clothing that all needed a little bit of love. Apparently, my great aunt was doing some closet cleaning and Mama Grand thought I might be able to use the clothes for something. Oh yes...*maniacally rubs hands together*

In the bag was this fabulous striped tee! It originally had some spots on the front in the yellow area.

Want to see how I fixed it so those spots never show?

It's tutorial time!

To start, I assessed the damage. I could only find two spots on the shirt that needed to be addressed, and one was directly in front on the yellow stripe. After checking for spots on the back of the shirt and finding it clean, I decided to flip this shirt around.

First, I moved the shirt around on Emma, making the original front the new back. I then traced my neckline (using a handy compass - much more useful for sewing than math, I say) down to the spot.

Here is the original back prepped to be the new front. I've removed the sleeves and pinned in the side seams. I like my t-shirts fitted, which works well with the scoop back. Less gappage = less bra showing.

I drew the front neckline free-hand, making sure to to draw around the original neckline and tags.

Next: Cut out your necklines. Please do not cut the neckline while you are wearing you shirt as this might be awkward and slightly dangerous.

Next, I took the bottom of an old white t-shirt and cut one long continuous strip to use as trim around the neckline. I machine stitched the trim to the right side of the fabric before hand stitching it closed on the wrong side. I prefer not to have my stitches show (because it tends to get sketchy when I machine stitch), but if you prefer using a sewing machine, I say go for it!

Repeat the trim process on the sleeves.

Voila! A fabulous new top that is stain free until you eat your first meal that involves sauce.

Sew Weekly Challenge: Accessorize or "The Tardis Taffy"

Friends, it should come as no surprise that I chose Doctor Who as my inspiration for the first official challenge of the year. I mean, I have the shoes, I'm making my bedroom into a spaceship, and my hand is still cramped from making the scarf.

Not too long ago, I had some fabulous Tardis jewelry come into my possession via The Sisters Ruehl Etsy Shop. I grabbed the necklace first, but then *gasp* there were earrings, too! Now I just needed an outfit. Enter this challenge + the Colette Sewing Handbook...

and a shooty dog thing.

I made this fabulous Taffy with some polyester that I have been keeping in my stash for what seems like forever. I only had large scraps to work with, but I was determined because this fabric is AWESOME.

I'm in love with the sheer portions of this shirt. I didn't cut the shirt on the bias just so I could have the sheer stripes running vertically. I love the way these appear on the curve of the sleeve.

Making this shirt was a breeze aside from hand sewing the trim onto the sleeve edge. I chose to hand sew because my machine tends to eat edges and I really wanted my stitching to be hidden.

The back was pieced together from two sheer portions of the shirt. I'm so glad I kept this tan tank top!

I did have some issues sewing through the polyester - it seemed to resist every single machine needle. My French seams are a mess but they are FRENCH SEAMS. I was so excited to finally learn this skill! Once I got the hang of it, it was a total piece of cake. French seams will be making regular appearances on my garments from here on out.

Here's a picture of me waiting for that silly Doctor to show up. He's late per usual... which might be a good thing this time because OMG WHAT HAPPENED TO THE BOTTOM OF MY SKIRT?!

It appears the seam binding I used from my stash bled through and stained my fabric. Once I came to grips with this fact, I trucked myself up to the local Hancock Fabrics (and by local I mean it takes an hour to get there on the Red Line) to buy black dye. Black dye covers all manner of sins, right? Imagine my shock when Hancock Fabrics was out of black dye. FAIL. I'll never make that trip again.

It only leads me to wonder how long the skirt has looked like this and I haven't noticed. Obviously I still didn't notice when these pictures were taken ... but I found out shortly after. Oy.

I apologize for the complete lack of silence over here, but I'm battling with a demon....

Don't tell me if you know, but I swear that if they don't get together, I'm going to vomit with anger.

Downton Abbey is the ONLY show I cannot sew through because I am riveted the entire time. It is my kryptonite. I'm working through Season 2 steadily this week, begging Rob to put on the next episode even when it's WAY past my bedtime or we've just watched three in a row.

I get in quite a panic. He doesn't dare deny me :)

Sew Weekly Challenge: Celebration or "The New Year's Eve Dress"

It was a top night, y'all.

I'll start with the normal pictures, because it only gets crazier from here...

This dress is New Look 6723 (view B), created using navy Fashionaire lining fabric and cream lace from my stash. I cut out the lace using the pattern pieces and then flat-lined it to each navy base piece before sewing it all together. I had enough of the navy fabric left to use it as actual lining material. The navy fabric belt is from a button down shirt I wear regularly for work.

Early in the night, I went from heels to sneakers. And by sneakers, I mean HAND PAINTED DOCTOR WHO SHOES.

My best friend, Steph, made me these awesome shoes for Christmas. I about lost my mind, y'all. I wish the picture wasn't so blurry because they are EPIC.

Since I was already wearing a Doctor Who apron and shoes, I grabbed K-9 for an impromptu picture.

I may or may not have had an entire bottle of wine by myself at this point.

This picture made me realize just how much I like boat necklines. I think I will definitely be incorporating these more in 2012.

These are my fabulous Chicago ladies, and we all went to college together. One by one, we each migrated to this amazing city. This is one of my absolute favorite pictures ever.

I love events like New Year's because people dress up, drink a lot, and take lots of pictures. There is also a lot of hugging. As I am a very huggy person, New Year's is one of my favorite holidays.

An exact representation of my outfit for the whole night. I wore slippers the whole time. My place, my rules.

I've got a little Captain in me.

As this is our third year of hosting a New Year's party, the tradition has developed that at some point during the night, we will all end up in the bathtub for pictures. We are all holding Carbon Crusader pencils with mustaches attached.

Eventually I took off the dress because the lace was rubbing my underarms raw... but this was after eight hours of wearing it, so...

I put on my onesie pajamas. With orange and pink swirls. And monkeys.

SO COMFY.

Chicago Fabric Shopping!

Last Friday, I got to hang out with the one and only Molly! She invited me along to check out a new (to us) fabric store, Textile Discount Outlet. How could I resist???

Molly wrote up a fabulous review and description of the store here. Adding my two cents, if you take the train, it is crazy close to the Damen stop on the Pink Line (entirely too convenient for someone with a fabric addiction).

I took this picture in the basement. She's surrounded by TONS of upholstery material. I kept a lookout for anything that might work for a chair I'm recovering for the Tardis Bedroom.

These bolts of fabric actually worked like a deterrent for me - keeping in mind that I would have to carry these bolts up/down stairs in order to get material cut, I passed on a lot of fabric I thought I wanted.

There were random bins here and there - here are some with belt buckles and 7 Eleven patches.

There was this spot that was nothing but zippers of every shape and size and color. Molly was gleeful over the sheer amount.(Believe it or not, there was a sign next to me that said "Sorting in Progress" but zippers were EVERYWHERE. There was an entire boxed off space next to us filled with separating and metallic zippers.)

Will I go back? Most definitely. I usually buy zippers via Etsy, but I loved the variety of colors they had available here. The fabric was VERY affordable (compared to JoAnn's and Hancock's) and I liked the huge amount of fabric types that were available to us. I loved the fabric Molly picked out for her New Orleans dress - you must check it out here!

I bought some purple sequined trim, some lace remnants, a buckle covering kit, a tacky gold belt buckle, and this FABULOUS sunny eyelet.

It was fabulous meeting Molly and finding a new fabric store in Chicago! I am definitely looking forward to my next trip back :)

Bring On 2012!

Friends, remember that time I talked about goals and resolutions and all those other things that come along with starting a new year? It's that time again to reveal my goals and resolutions....

Resolutions:

1. Stop (or at least reduce) my street confrontations. Hard to imagine, I know, but I have the temper of a very mean spirited donkey. If I see a drunken jerkface on the street and he is jaywalking in front of the car but not nearly fast enough, I let him know. Even if I am sitting at a stoplight. No filter at all, I'm telling you. Apparently Mama Grand thinks she is going to get a call from Rob that I've been stabbed, so in an effort to extend my life, I've decided to bite my tongue a little more often. And try not to get stabbed. I think that's a good resolution.

2. Stop biting my nails. This has only been my resolution for ten years, so we'll bring it back for good measure.

Goals:

1. Play a French song on the guitar. I've been taking French classes for about three months now, and received the Pimsleur French audiobook for Christmas. I've had a guitar since seventh grade and have not learned a song on it yet. This is the year, I swear. I would really love to learn how to play this song before 2012 ends:

2. Use every sewing pattern in my stash. I have such a large collection and I think it's time to explore those patterns that have been getting dusty for a long time now.

And finally....

3. Wear something me-made/altered/refashioned every day. I'm giving myself five vacation days that will give me a chance to do laundry/whatnot and wear things that might be getting neglected in the closet. So, for 361 days I will wear something that my hands have touched. Will there be documentation? Of course, but only at the end of each week. You and I would both get sick of my posting photos every day, I think. Oh yes, and those fabulous new undergarments that are currently on my sewing table TOTALLY COUNT. Winning. (There will be no pictures of said undergarments on my actual body because Mama Grand would have a heart attack ... and we love Mama Grand.)

Sew Weekly Challenge: Free For All or the "I'm Not Wearing A Coat Today Dress"

Friends, first of all, HAPPY CHRISTMAS to all who celebrate! May you get everything you wished for and surround yourself with people you love. And alcohol. I'm currently drinking my Woodchuck cider and blogging under some serious blankets.

We are celebrating this holiday with the Grand family, and it is surprisingly warm outside. For the first time in a long time, I was able to venture outside without a coat on Christmas. It was quite refreshing! (The above blankets are necessary because my parents have a very chilly house. There are many Steelers blankets floating around.)

I wanted to make a dress for this festive occasion. Sometimes I feel like important (or highlight of the week) events are a good reason for making a new outfit. Oh, I'm going to a party? Must make myself a new top to wear. I do this all the time, and the holidays are no different. For this particular holiday, I made Simplicity 2549 in a FABULOUS fabric that has been lounging in my stash this whole year. I've been itching to use it and this challenge gave me the perfect opportunity.

It's a very lightweight cotton, so it's perfect for sunny Christmas days or spring/summertime outings.

I did not line the dress, but it does have a neckline facing that came out quite nicely. I definitely prefer the A-line skirt to the version that I made here.

Close up of the fabric. Isn't it totally fab??? I wish I could remember who I got it from so I could ask that person where I could get more. All the outline details are in gold and the whole dress just shines when the light hits it. It definitely turned out better than I could have hoped!

Sew Weekly Challenge: Patternless or "I look like a Waffle House sign"

Friends, I think I may have taken the easier road on this challenge. First, I pinned a piece of waffle knit fabric onto Emma until it made the shape I wanted. I cut a hole for the neckline, pinned on a back piece, and trimmed and altered until I had two pieces that were similar and had hems the same length.

You'll see that it's yellow waffle knit, which means my brain automatically goes to smothered and covered...

I worked on, dreaming of the tasty goodness which cannot be found in Chicago, and before I knew it, I had a t-shirt.

You'd think with my first attempt at draping (if it can even be called that), I would've tried for something a little more ... exciting. In an effort to bust more of my stash, I cut up an already scrapped yellow t-shirt and used pieces around the neck, armholes, and hem.

It is completely unsurprising that this is one comfy shirt, but I was shocked when I realized that it took me about an hour (from beginning draping to finishing the armholes) to complete this project. I imagine it would've taken me at least half that time for measuring and pinning if I had used a pattern. This shirt makes me feel as though my time was well spent. I can't lie - it was pretty invigorating to be working without a pattern and have no idea if the outcome would be wearable.

Since I didn't think this project was going to turn out very well, I didn't mind that the fabric had a red stain on the upper shoulder blade. Oh well ... it gives the shirt character. Maybe I should turn it into a pseudo-tattoo that is a heart with "Mom" written over it. Or not. Whatevs.

Now that the first patternless project has turned out so well, I might be persuaded into pushing myself a little farther next time. I really enjoyed the adventure of seeing what was coming next and how it was going to turn out - it got the creative juices flowing!! ( ... and possibly made me hungry. For waffles. And hashbrowns. And really awful coffee at 3am.)

Sew Weekly Challenge: Purple or "Purple Plaidtastic Party Shirt"

Friends, I apologize for the delay in posting this, but I had some UBER FABULOUS GUESTS in town this past weekend:

Chicago winter = serious business.

Yes, my parents came to visit and see the city in all of its holiday glory. Unfortunately, this "glory" included extremely low temperatures while we were wandering the Christmas market at Daley Plaza (the gluhwein did not warm me up nearly enough). We ate cheeseburgers at the Billy Goat and saw an AMAZING show at the Building Stage (my face hurt from laughing), watched the Muppets at the movies and ate lots of food. Overall, a completely lovely time and I am already planning their next visit back.

Once they had left, I got cracking on my purple project. I had some leftover fabric from the dress I made for Becky's wedding. Since I only had a yard to work with, I had to be extremely careful which pattern I chose. After much perusing through my collection, I decided on Simplicity 2364, version F (with the flowy sleeve thingy). I thought it might be nice to have a one-shoulder top in my closet in case I want to be extra fabulous for something.

The pattern called for elastic, which I scrapped after the initial fitting. This shirt fits like a glove and I don't see it falling down EVER. While this isn't as stretchtastic as jersey, the fabric does have some give, which allows me to pull it on and off without any other fastenings. I am a big fan of shirts that don't need extra bits added.

Forgive the weird fabric rolls in the back - the fabric kept getting caught on my jeans. I think this is a top which needs a black skirt/pant companion.

While I don't imagine this shirt making a regular appearance in my day to day life right now (it's not really a cold weather shirt), I am definitely going to whip this out for any parties that come up. I feel very hip in it... almost Jersey Shore-ish, but that could be the hairstyle thing I was attempting. (Just a note - I've never seen Jersey Shore, but I know what a Snooki is. It's like a Wookie, only shorter. Bah dum chee.)

Sew Weekly Challenge: Around the House or "The Rainbow Brite Dress"

Friends, if you had Rainbow Brite sheets hanging around your house, wouldn't you make a dress as well?

For the pattern I used McCalls 5113 for the top and Vogue 8701 for the skirt. Now, since these sheets had seen a lot of love from me when I was growing up, they definitely needed to be flat-lined with some super soft cotton. I added piping around the sweetheart neckline and an orange fabric sash to bring out more of the rainbow.

While I really like the idea of this dress, there is going to need to be some tweaking before it gets worn this summer. The waist seems to be a bit lower than I would like, so it may need to be adjusted, especially in the back. Other than that, I would love to wear this on our summer vacation this year. Can't you see me riding around on a carousel in this number?

This dress has been done for about three days, but Rob and I have been busting our butts to get the place before Mama and Papa Grand come this weekend. I am so super stoked because I bought my amazing parents the BEST CHRISTMAS PRESENT EVER. I have to give it to them this weekend so they have time to finalize their travel arrangements. I gave them dates and location already so they could get the airfare together, but they do not know the "why."

Seriously love me some Rainbow Brite. This will be worn often once it is fixed. I think one of the best things about sewing and creating your own clothes is that almost every piece is a complete original. If I ever see someone running around with shoulderpads as a hat, or doodles on their bodice, or a Rainbow Brite dress, I might pass out from shock.

30DoC: Recycled Items

Friends, I love pillows. I sleep with two stuffed in a pillowcase - that's how much I love pillows. They are also fabulous for using scraps that are too small/damaged/ugly for any other project. I had a fabulous piece of red striped upholstery material and I used the whole thing for a single pillow:

That pillow is stuffed to the brim, and has several projects in it, including the sweater skirt (it began disintegrating...but it makes great stuffing).

30DoC: Something I've Never Done Before

Friends, I was completely unable to craft for today's challenge, which seems like something I've never done before. I blame the state of my sewing room:

I promise those boxes are not all sewing supplies (is that a good thing or a bad thing?). We had to clean out our storage unit before tomorrow, so everything is everywhere. It's pretty overwhelming.

Look! I found my buttons. They are under the winter coats right there. Underneath all of that is a bed. Un - freaking - real.

I cannot even see Rob right now because the boxes in our living room are stacked five high. It's intense. It wouldn't be so bad if all the blankets/sheets/clothing that was in storage didn't need to be washed because of the public storage smell.

So, Friends, please forgive me for not crafting today. I'm sure my crafty spirit is buried under one of these piles somewhere...

In the meantime, have a fabulous, uncluttered night!

30DoC: Pinterest Finds

Friends, it is hardly a secret that I love Pinterest with a fiery passion. For this challenge, I selected a pin in my Sewing Inspiration board: See Kate Sew's tutorial on using horizontal pleats to spice up a skirt.

This purple polka dot skirt was sitting in my refashion pile without any love, so I decided to conduct my experiment on it...

Close up of the horizontal pleat. I love the little decorative touch it adds to the skirt - I may even add another before I wear it again this summer! I'll have to remember this before I hem another skirt - this was definitely easier :)

30DoC: Vintage Inspiration

Friends, I apologize - I am totally late posting this, but I blame the post Thanksgiving traffic on the way home from Rob's parents. I often had to repeat to myself the "Groundhog Day" mantra: Don't drive angry.

Ok, once I settled down and got moving, I finished up the dress I had started before we left. This was my sister's graduation dress from high school, I think ... but it was passed onto me to refashion.

I loved the sweetheart neckline immediately, and I felt this could be a very sweet sundress a la vintage Sears ads. And by vintage I mean 1980s...because that totally counts right? Does that make me vintage? Oy - don't answer that.

I cut 18" off the bottom, removed the sleeves, took in the sides and made a fabric belt to hold it all together.

I love how it came out, and I'm really excited about wearing it this summer! Until then, it's getting packed away with all the rest of the summer items under my bed. Winter has arrived, y'all, and it's going to get real ugly outside soon.

30DoC: For the Kitchen

I made pie. Kind of.

Susie, Rob's mom, is a great cook so I try and learn a little bit about cooking when we visit.

Susie put me on pie crust decorating duty. She gave me a cookie cutter and I went nuts.

Susie and I got into a fight and tried to hug each other.

The pies came out reasonably well. Look at my lovely crusts! They were SUPER tasty.

I had a fabulous time decorating and then eating these wondrous pies. Do you decorate your crusts if you make pie?

Susie's recipe for pie crust:

1 1/3 cup flour

1 tablespoon of sugar

1/2 teaspoon of salt

1 stick of butter

1/4 cup cold water

The butter and water need to be cold. Cut butter into salt/flour/sugar mixture. Mix water in - works great with food processor. You should end up with a ball of dough. Refrigerate for one hour. Roll out to desired thickness and lay over pie plate.

Sew Weekly Challenge and 30DoC: Something for Yourself and Epic Plaid Pattern Re-Do

Friends, back in September I had a meltdown over these pants:

This time, the McCall 3935 pants are epic for a completely different reason: the polyester knit plaid.

There were no insane cutting and crying issues. The plaid matched up immediately and I didn't have to fight it at all. These two pairs of pants could not be any more different!

In fact, a huge difference between these two pairs is that this pair did not need ANY fastenings. Apparently polyester knit is great for sliding on and off. These are like fabulous retro lounge pants that will never need ironing. They are perfect for after Thanksgiving meals. I feel nearly invincible.

The only thing I am sad about is that these pants are covered in flour and need to befriend a washing machine before I can wear them again. Other than that, it's been absolutely delightful running around in them!

Happy Thanksgiving All! I am feeling quite stuffed and happy and am now perusing Etsy for Black Friday deals. I keep finding things for me, so it looks like I am going to be giving myself a great Christmas.

Friends, despite my hesitation to work with Burda patterns, I must say that I love the Charlie Grocery Bag pattern. My friend, Mina, asked for me to make her one for her birthday and picked out her fabric from my stash. Though her birthday has passed, I finally finished it for this challenge.

30DoC: Look Out Your Window

Friends, when I look out my window, everything sparkles:

I definitely wanted to make a shirt that reflected this awesome quality of my living space. I used New Look 6648 and some FABULOUS fabric that had been lingering in my stash for way too long, and bada bing bada boom:

Once I found out this fireplace worked, I parked myself in front of it. I am currently roasting like a pale puffy marshmallow and loving every minute of it.

This is probably my favorite version of this pattern that I have done. I did not expect to enjoy the look of the sparkles so much, and I definitely didn't expect it not to itch. Not itching = fabulous.

Seriously, I ask you: what's Thanksgiving without a little vampirism?

Speaking of Thanksgiving, we have been cooking all day in preparation for tomorrow's feast. Friends who are celebrating: Have a fantastic day with your families and friends, and Happy Thanksgiving!

30DoC: Lighting Fail

Friends, I have a huge button stash. So when I saw this picture on Pinterest....

I went out to one of the Chicago thrift stores and bought a lamp with a large shade for decorating.

Unfortunately, there was a problem...

WHERE IS MY BUTTON STASH NOW?!

I have no idea. Project = fail ... until I find my buttons. I'll bet they are in with the piles of coats because that is only logical. Oy.

30DoC: Unconventional Sweater/Skirt

Friends, I hate being cold. Seriously. I have sheets that feel like they have been made out of teddy bears. I decided to make something that was going to keep me toasty through the winter months.

I took a large sweater, cut off the sleeves and folded some of the excess over to make a waistband. I threw some tights on underneath for optimal warmth.

Like my snazzy slippers? Ms. Star and Ms. Moon and they are super warm. These are also the best slippers to wear when flying across the floor at top speed.

Friends, do you use sweaters as a craft material? Let me know how you've used them in the past because I definitely have more of these in my stash!

30DoC; Thanksgiving or "I'm Going to Eat a Ton of Turkey" Dress

Friends, I want to thank all of you for all of your kind comments and amazing tips regarding the "Please, Just Make It Stop" Dress. It made me feel worlds better that maybe I wasn't the only one who absolutely detests tracing patterns. If I ever do choose to venture down that road again, I will definitely employ some of the tips you have so kindly passed along to me!

For today's challenge, I wanted to make up for yesterday's challenge. I knew I wanted to continue my stash busting trend, so I grabbed some sheer brown polyester blend and a fabulous ivory polyester blend for the lining to make Butterick 5206:

I figured that by using knit fabrics, I could avoid worrying about my clothes feeling too tight when I assault the meaty juicy goodness that is waiting for me on Thursday. There is one slight problem, however...

The parts of my body that stick out slightly press up against the ivory polyester lining..

...making a weird kind of effect and drawing eyes to certain parts that shouldn't be so recognizable.

I looked at the photos and it was very much a reaction of, "WHAT IS THAT."

The fabric is brown with an orange and yellow pattern. The belt incorporates some scrap orange polyester that was sitting in the stash closet of doom.

I like the dress, truly I do, but I'm worried if it doesn't seem a little... ahem ... scandalous for a Thanksgiving feast with the boyfriend's family.... many of whom are very religious and I have never met.

Friends, would you scrap the polyester dress of wonder? Or would you say it's okay for a family gathering?? I'd love to know your opinions! Either way, the dress is super comfy and would pack very well. Maybe I should track down a cardigan in the meantime...

30DoC and Sew Weekly Challenge: Use Fabric or the "Please, Just Make It Stop" Dress

Friends, this challenge totally whooped me. For someone who has never traced a pattern, the BurdaStyle book offers many hurdles. It seemed to get quite a bit worse when I realized I was tracing the coat pattern and not the dress pattern, and worse still when I pressed too hard with my tracing wheel and sliced the paper pattern up something awful. It took me an hour to trace two pieces. I almost cried but then Rob made cookies because he could see I was on the verge of a breakdown.

I knew I wanted to make the dress pattern, and I knew I wanted to make it out of flannel (because it is winter, y'all, and I want something I can wear now).

I eliminated the flounces and the keyhole neckline, created a Peter Pan collar using my vintage Simplicity 5514 (which I got from the New York Meet-Up - yay!), created a bow belt from Tilly's fabulous tutorial, used the pocket pattern from Simplicity 2444, and the sleeve version B from Simplicity 2501. Oh yes, and I added about two inches to the skirt length.

This dress took me about eleven hours.

I think I like it, but since it took me so long and was such a headache to make, I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to...

(Pauses and looks up to see Rob has turned on Pride and Prejudice. TOTAL DISTRACTION.)

As I was saying before I was interrupted by details of Mr. Bingley, I don't know if I'll ever be able to wear this dress without thinking of all the frustration that came from making it.

I like the Peter Pan collar. It was WAY larger but I trimmed it down a bit and quite like the effect. Rob said it was very "French schoolgirl."

Close up of the flannel and the bow belt. The bow belt tutorial is a breeze and I made it and the collar out of the same scrap fabric. I see more of these happening in the future.

I used a weird cotton cloud fabric for the lining. I never had a project in mind to attach it to, so I decided it would work perfectly for this.

The sleeves might be my favorite part. I like that they are super "Anne of Green Gables" puffy.

Friends, I cannot honestly say if I will ever use the BurdaStyle book patterns again. I was so frustrated that the patterns were falling apart the first time I went over them with my tracing wheel, and I don't know if the pattern sheet would last for another dress making adventure. I enjoyed the book for how it offered up ways to restyle patterns, which inspired me to add so many elements to my version. I think in that way it offers excellent guidance, but I was sadly disappointed in the actual patterns (and the paper on which they were printed).

30DoC: Anniversary Gifts...

Friends, I must make another confession: I do not celebrate anniversaries in the traditional sense. Seeing as I am still unmarried, I don't follow the traditional anniversary calendar with the Rob. For our upcoming three year anniversary, I'm going to be running a race dressed as a mermaid. And then we're going to Hogwarts. Definitely not traditional.

However, keeping this upcoming anniversary/half marathon in mind, I need something to wear (besides the purple seashell sports bra). So, I'm altering this challenge a bit to be: What I Would Wear On My Totally Nontraditional Anniversary.

I took this nightgown that had fallen into my possession and decided I wanted a flowy tunic thing:

I sliced a foot of fabric off of the bottom, used the Sew Weekly sleeve pattern, and made a fabric belt to cinch in the remaining fabric. It's sheer, so I'm wearing a tank top underneath, but this will be perfect for the summer months when it's stupidly humid outside.

See? It's so comfortable I could sleep in it or do my "back up the bus" move. Beep beep beep.

30DoC: Use Your Neighborhood as Inspiration

Friends, if you are ever in my neighborhood, you must see a show at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. I have seen many many shows, and it was here that I saw the best production I have EVER seen. Their version of Twelfth Night was unbelievable (you can read about the set design here. IT HAD A POOL AND PEOPLE WERE SWIMMING. IN THEIR COSTUMES. I about passed out). So, with that said, I wanted to reflect both my love of Shakespeare and the red NAVY PIER sign that precedes the entrance into the Theater.

On my trip to London almost five years ago, I picked up a t-shirt at the Globe which ended up being a little too short for my comfort. The emblem is the beginning of the Mercutio's monologue, "O, then I see Queen Mab hath been with you" from Romeo and Juliet.

I followed Megan Nicolay's directions for the Slash 'N' Sash tee from 108 Ways to Transform a T-Shirt. I used some red polyester blend that I picked up on my New York adventure.

Rob was making faces at me. I made one back.

Like all the boxes? We've finally got furniture back! I slept in a real bed last night!!!!

Breaking Dawn is coming out soon. This is my best vampire face in celebration. Don't judge me. I like to giggle at Jacob Black's abs from the back of the theater - it's almost tradition now.

30DoC: For Your Pet...

Friends, I'll begin by saying that I don't have a pet. If I did, I would love it and snuggle it and take it for runs and name it Reptar. Even if it was a kitty, we would still go for runs.

But since I don't have a pet, I made something for myself instead. My sewing chair needed some love:

I used an XL red t-shirt (that said GLEE across the front) and Megan Nicolay's 108 Ways to Transform a T-Shirt.

Voila! Cushy bottom.

Thanks for all of your lovely comments on my Annie Savoy skirt! I am wearing it around today and it is so warm. I must make more. Did you know you can buy flannel that isn't plaid??? Sarah was kind enough to let me know. I think my mind = blown.

30DoC: As Seen on TV/At the Movies or "The Annie Savoy Outfit"

Friends, the first time I saw Bull Durham, I knew Annie Savoy was a powerhouse. I aspired from that point on to be the most confident version of myself and to wear fabulous clothes. And maybe learn something about baseball because that might come in handy.

For this part of the 30 Day Challenge, I made the outfit Annie wears when choosing between Crash and Nuke.

For my version, I took in the sides of a v-neck sweater that hadn't been worn in ages, made a skirt using some flannel in my stash and the skirt portion of Vogue 8701, and threw on my red belt for good measure.

I love the skirt. It's heavy and warm and will be well used during winter when I grow tired of pants. I'm already plotting how to work flannel into other parts of my wardrobe.

For the lining I used the fitted sheet that was leftover from this sheet set. I like to think that should I have an upskirt incident (this IS the Windy City - these things need to be planned for), my fabulous lining might distract from ... anything else.

The sweater might be too bulky to put in the skirt. If I do wear the sweater and skirt together again, I'll definitely include the belt since it helps to break up all the black and white.This is easily one of the warmest/nicest looking outfits I have to wear around this winter.

30DoC: Fall Colors

Friends, as soon as I saw this tutorial, I was in love: DIY Wrap Top

I wanted to try my hand at it with some fabric that I've been itching to use all summer. It has some lovely burnt orange flowers on it, which helps camouflage any stains that may have occurred to the fabric over the years.

Here is my version:

I think my only wish is that I had used a fabric that had similar right and wrong sides - I think it might be too obvious in this shirt and be a little more distracting than I had intended. I have some blue linen in the stash that I may try next.

The longer I wear this, the more I love it ... especially on days like today when it's unseasonably warm outside.

I highly recommend this tutorial if you have a printed fabric that you are itching to show off!

30DoC: Flowers

Friends, I love flowers. I love flowers even more when they don't die.

So I made a headband out of scraps from an apron and rosettes out of scraps from the Jake Ryan t-shirt.

This is my excited face because the cleaning crew just left and the floors are shiny. I've already tried sliding across the hardwood in my slippers, and remembered my stress fracture when I fell. I am not a good patient because I tend to forget I am injured A lot.

This is my even more excited face because I found out we have all the ingredients for a White Russian.

30DoC: Keep Yourself Organized

Friends, you would think that I would be super duper organized now that I have shiny new closets at my disposal. Well....I'm working on it. Lots and lots of stash busting. I don't think I am going to need to buy fabric for the next two years.

The fabric scraps I've been saving for that "someday" project have finally found a home as a sewing machine cover. Believe it or not, I haven't had one up until now, but seeing as our space is getting dustier by the day, I thought it might be time.

I used Diana Rupp's pattern from Sew Everything - directions were a breeze!

It's very blue, and made out of some cotton fabric scraps from various projects. I love how it came out, and I will be even happier if it saves my machine from a dusty death.

Look at all that white stuff. They weren't even working in this room! Oy.

Sew Weekly and 30DoC: Pin-Up or Use a Photograph for Inspiration

Ok, so it is crazy fabulous that these two challenges fell during the same week. Huzzah!

With the Pin-Up challenge, I knew that if these pictures were going on the blog, there needed to not be a whole lot of skin showing. So...classy pin-ups. I specifically started looking for redhead pin-ups. Lucky for me, I follow the Pinterest boards of Max, who has curated the most amazing collection of redhead pictures and even has a board devoted to redhead pin-ups. Seriously took all the searching dirty work out of my hands.

I found the perfect inspiration:

Isla Fisher - Vanity Fair Vanities by Michael Elins, November 2006

So my goal was to have a very fuzzy sweater and some itty bitty bottoms... but tasteful itty bitty. I don't want to make something I will never wear again.

So here is my first item for the Hand-Me-Down Hussy outfit: a black (cashmere? super soft acrylic?) v-neck sweater that was originally my sisters. I stopped wearing it because I like my sweaters a little bit longer normally.

Next, we have this dress ... which I think was my sister's Confirmation/High School Graduation dress? Not sure. Either way, it was hers, but now it is mine.

I was going to donate this dress when Mama Grand was trying to pass it off to me, but she said, "Why don't you do something with the buttons?"

Brilliant, Mama G. I will look twice before I donate anything again.

I sliced up the front of the sweater, bias trimmed the edges (hot pink for a little thrill), added some vintage lace from the stash and added buttonholes for the fabulous pearl buttons. For the skirt, I shortened the pieces of the pattern I used for this skirt here (found the third pattern piece - yay!), cut the pattern out from the dress fabric, added a zipper and voila!

I love the way the outfit turned out! The sweater is incredibly warm, so it's perfect for the impending deep freeze, and the skirt flows beautifully. The only issue with the skirt is that it is more than a bit see-through. While it probably won't be worn again until summer since it's so lightweight, I may continue tweaking it - possibly adding some lace to the bottom?

Many thanks to the Rob for finding a clear space to take these pictures. The room you see to the right is the office/sewing area. He was propping the camera on a ladder and standing in the middle of a sea of dropcloths.

While the outfit didn't make me feel incredibly pin-up-y, the red lipstick did. I will never underestimate red lipstick again.

30DoC: Food Related

Friends, the Rob and I have been living with a pseudo kitchen for about two weeks. We have two ovens, a drawer microwave, and a fridge. No sink or stove top. Our food choices have consisted of some microwave meals, sandwiches, and cereal. Lots of cereal. So much cereal we ran out of plastic spoons and I had to use a fork.

With this in mind, I decided I wanted to make a meal that was satisfying, had healthy ingredients (and by healthy, I mean lots of protein), and was not made in the microwave.

Trolling through Pinterest, these two recipes (via my lovely friend Michelle) caught my eye:

Eggs Baked in Ham Cups

"Easy Baked Croissant Egg Cups Even Your Kids Can Make"

I was in love. Eggs, ham, and croissants? Sounds perfect. We tracked down our muffin pan and got to baking in our shiny new ovens.

Croissant cups on the left, ham cups on the right. Both bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit, so we put them in the same pan.

Mine look exactly like the pictures ... in a Picasso sort of way.

The croissant ones were exploding. Or the cream was rebelling against the eggs.

Awww....look at the cute little ham cup! These tasted amazing. It was like an egg mcmuffin without the mcmuffin. We ate them with our fingers and pronounced them a success.

The croissant cups... not so much. The croissant dough did not bake at all and I didn't want to risk eating it.

I wonder how many people ruin a recipe specifically designed for baking with kids?

Maybe I'll just stick to sewing from here on out :)

30DoC: Make a Card

I knew I wanted to make a card with fabric, seeing as how I have more of that than any other crafting supply. I started hunting around for a fabric card tutorial, because I wanted to give my card the best chance at seeing the light of day.

Via Pinterest (that tool of wonder and magic), I found this:

Super lovely, right? And Lindsay from The Cottage Home made a fantastic tutorial for the rest of us who are scared to sew on paper.

Friends, let me just warn you and say that my card looks like something off of Regretsy.

I don't know if it's the sequins or the woodland animals frolicking across flowers and holly berries but something about this card is ... off. My stitching was wretched so I covered it up with sequins. I think the only thing missing from this disaster is puffy paint.

"Dear Rob, Even though this card is awful, please know you are still 'deer' to me this holiday season. Love, Meg. PS. I love you with the passion of six bunnies fighting over a carrot."

Woodland animals and pictures with toilets in them are awesome.

Rob was pleased. He genuinely laughed when I gave it to him, but I don't know if that was out of horror of my crafty skills or he was genuinely touched by my kind words and the accompanying animals.

Well .... tomorrow we deal with food! Let's hope that goes a little better and there are no toilets involved.

30DoC: Craft With Materials Found Near You

It's currently hard to see all my materials with all the scrap fabric surrounding me, so today's challenge is definitely going to address that. I wanted something simple and classy ... and that has been on my to-do list for several months.

Enter: Clara Bow Pin from Colette Patterns

The directions were a dream, of course, and I love how my little lavender bow came out:

I've had this linen fabric floating around in my stash forever, and this craft whipped up in no time. It's definitely a great way to bust your stash, which means we might be seeing more of these pop up from time to time!

Oh, my friends, how I adore all of you. I adore you so much sometimes that I do crazy things, like sign up for Becky and the Beanstalk's 30 Days of Crafting Challenge. I've spent most of the day today plotting out my attack plan for the next 30 days, and friends, it is EPIC.

There was lots of Pinterest action going on, in case some of you following me thought I had lost my mind. Not the case at all - I am just making my plans so I can throw them out the window as the month progresses.

Now, I know some of you are dreading winter like moi. If you want to beat those winter blues and put some Vitamin D crafty goodness into your life for the next 30 days, I think you should sign up as well. Becky's pretty cool. Her puppy is AWESOME.

So won't you join my lovely friend Becky (and her faithful follower, moi) as she guides us in 30 Days of SPECTACULARNESS???

Sew Weekly Challenge: Orange or "My Signature Shirt"

I have said many times before that orange is my signature color. I could not have been more excited about this challenge. Seriously. A whole challenge about the color of my dreams? The possibilities were literally endless.

And I chose to make a t-shirt.

I used one of the first patterns I EVER bought - New Look 6817. The version I used offered five knit shirt options, but I cannot find a picture of it online anywhere (jeez...when did I buy this?!). I had never used it, and I thought it was high time. I had just enough of this fabulous orange jersey in my stash to squeeze out a shirt. I used the Sew Weekly sleeve pattern for the sleeves.

I'm showing off my epic crutch arms. I am buff now. It's interesting.

A close up of the side gathers. There are gathers on each side seam, and it adds a little pizazz to the shirt. I dig it.

I used white thread. I don't know how I ended up with five spools of white, but some serious stash/thread busting needs to be done.

Just to make up for the lack of imagination with the first outfit, I made... another shirt. It doesn't have orange in it, but it is SUPER colorful.

I used Simplicity 2570 and used the Sew Weekly sleeve pattern since the shirt was originally designed as sleeveless. The fabric is the most wild and fabulous silk.

Please pardon the crease - I cannot find our iron. It's in a box in a room and I haven't the foggiest.

Flowers, geometric designs, and some crazy swirls that look vaguely familiar...

I did the Mena Trott test where I basted the side and saw if I could wiggle in without adding a zipper. I definitely could, which makes this one of the easiest projects I've tackled in a while. I spent the most time on the seam finishes, where I used my oh so favorite method listed here (by the amazing Sunni).

There's going to be a great amount of stash busting happening in the next several posts. I still have boxes of fabric in storage and the new and improved fabric closet is overflowing onto the floor. Must. Sew. Faster.

Sew Weekly Challenge: Halloween or "Look at me! I'm the King of New York!"

Well, my choice of Halloween costume was made easier by the addition of my constant accessory: Crutches. So, with that in mind, I had two choices: Tiny Tim or Crutchy from Newsies. Seeing as I am not comfortable running around saying "God Bless Us, Everyone" and waving my crutch around, Crutchy became my obvious choice. Besides, I can easily imagine a young Christian Bale putting his arm around me affectionately.

I wanted a vest and I wanted knickers (I wear knickers now because knickers are cool). I used the Simplicity 2556 Vest Pattern (loved it - highly recommend) and Diana Rupp's Sew Everything Knockout Knickers Pattern for inspiration.

I also had a desire to make this a completely refashioned outfit because my new and spiffy fabric closet is already overflowing. Oy. I started with this suit jacket that Rob was going to donate.

It was, however, in less than ideal shape. It had been left on a windowsill and the sleeves and back right shoulder were greatly discolored.

This was going to be my main fabric for the vest. I was able to lay out all the vest pieces on the shell fabric, and even got some of the pieces cut on the fold out of sleeve fabric.

The knickers were going to be made out of a pair of suit pants I had gotten less than a year ago. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of tucking the left pant leg inside of a knee high boot and the fabric was destroyed. I ended up cutting off the bottom of the pant leg, cutting out the cuff pattern from the leftover fabric, sewing the cuff on and polished it off with button and buttonhole closure.

I finished the outfit as I was walking out the door to go a costume party. I can honestly say I have never made buttonholes so quickly.

I went paired with Joseph Pulitzer. I didn't know Joseph Pulitzer was hot.

The full outfit. My vest made out of the suit jacket and knickers made from the suit pants. The shirt was an old shirt of Rob's - I removed the pocket with the monogrammed initials and voila! A long sleeve button down for moi. I'm wearing tights under the knickers in this picture because it was a little chilly and I'm not able to wear a coat and use crutches.

I spent the night chatting with my lovely friend, Becky from Becky and the Beanstalk ... who was dressed as the awesome Amy Pond... and who mysteriously appeared with a police baton.

Mystery solved. AMY POND HAS GONE ROGUE, Y'ALL.

Close up of the fabric... note to self: Remember to check what kind of fabric you are working with before you start cutting. I assumed, silly me, that I was working with wool... oh no, it was 100% silk and it started unraveling as soon as I started cutting. Making this vest was a complete adventure after that.

I finished every seam just to keep the pieces from falling apart. Even with all that effort, I still developed a huge hole at Becky's... thank goodness I was in the home of a seamstress and was able to repair right away. Whew! Crisis averted.

The lining pockets and most of the outside pockets were kept in tact and used in the vest.

Making the knickers was a snap compared to the vest. I know that they will need to be worn with heels and a fabulous shirt in the near future.

Sew Weekly Challenge: Loungewear or "The Outfit of 1,000 Yawns"

Friends, this was, without a doubt, one of the weirdest weeks I have ever had. I was going merrily along my way, when *BAM* I got summoned, and then selected, for jury duty. Next thing I knew, my week was GONE. Up every morning to try and sneak in some hours at work before heading to the courthouse, and then leaving the courthouse after 6pm, getting stuck in rush hour traffic, and finally getting home late in the evening ... only to do it all again the next day. Oy vey! Needless to say, my Google Reader has been running rampant while I was gone, my friends think something happened to me, and apparently I missed out on some important world events while I was sequestered.

By the time it was all over last night, I was exhausted. Thank goodness I had a new outfit to snuggle up in and sleep the day away!

...and by snuggle I mean "laugh at Rob while he stands on top of a filing cabinet to take pictures"

For the fabric, I used some old flannel bedsheets that have indigo snowflakes printed all over. OMG FLANNEL I LOVE YOU. I used the Wear Anywhere Yoga Pants pattern from Diana Rupp's Sew Everything and the ever versatile Colette Sorbetto pattern (with the Sew Weekly sleeve addition) for the top.

Why "The Outfit of 1,000 Yawns"? Because as soon as I put this lovely loungewear on, I was yawning. It was practically snake yawning where I could have swallowed a whole animal.

I had epic tears rolling down my face and exhaustion set in. I was trying to sleep standing up. Which I've done before. In a bar. Don't judge me.

I wanted to make a tank top and mini bloomer set instead, but once the wind hit 50 mph this week and the waves hit 25 feet high, I knew winter was coming and I needed to be prepared. Apparently we are supposed to have the worst winter ever this year (but I think the weatherfolks say that every year). Bring it on, winter! I'm not scared of you ... much.

Many thanks to the Rob who drove me all around the city for work/jury duty/food (since we still have no way of preparing food at our campsite). My bum leg and I could not have done it without him.

PS. When they say bring a book to jury duty, do not bring James Michener's Texas or you might be sleeping on the table. It is slightly embarrassing when you re-enter the courtroom with weirdness on your face.

McCall's 2011 Holiday Collection

As in, "Finally! Footie pajamas!!!"

Yes, Friends, the McCall's Holiday Collection is out, and M6475 promises to bring joy and happiness to the Grand family this year. While this was my favorite of the whole collection, there were several others that caught my eye:

M6463 is fabulous. Simply fabulous. I love the polka dot print they used, but I LOVE that neckline. A smashing little number for New Year's Eve, perhaps?

I am digging this off the shoulder number. The red striped version of 6462 feels summery to me, and I could see this design working great in daring print. Why be subtle? Show off those freckled shoulders, girlfriend!

While I love this pattern and the raglan sleeves featured on the red and blue versions, I feel like the other two styles of M6460 are nearly identical to Colette Patterns Macaron. Thoughts?

Ok, at first sight I thought this pattern wasn't for me. After looking again, I fell in love with the cream version of M6467. The ruffles! The glorious ruffles! I fear the other styles featured with this pattern would make me look a bit pregnant, but if I could have ruffles and my waist defined, then I am sold.

Loving the one shoulder action on 6466 - especially with some sheer fabric or lace from my stash. Give me some poofy skirts any day!

So this week's challenge for the Sew Weekly is loungewear, and had I seen this M6472 pattern before beginning my current project, this would be it. The hooded nightshirt with a pair of Colette Mini Bloomers. This may still happen, just not this week.

Oh, McCall's...I see what you are trying to do here. Sneak those weird flaps/pockets/wings back into style. Not happening, Bud. The rest of the skirt versions of M6471 aren't so bad. Just say goodbye to the wings already, k? K.

For M6470, I would never have thought to make the shirt in a satin, but I am really loving how it comes off here. I would normally look at this and think jersey lounging shirt, but in satin, it becomes something I could wear to work or out on the town. Well played, McCall's... well played.

I do have a beef with this pattern. Why does the model look so angry? I know that M6464 wants to be like Simplicity's Amazing Fit patterns, but it doesn't come off as well here. The drawing representations aren't as clear, specifically with the dress skirt styles. Why not draw versions of each dress like you normally would for any other pattern? Showing each version in its entirety works.

M6465 is a good learning pattern for a beginning sewer. Simple construction elements and even some ruffle sleeves would make for a great first project for someone looking to sew. I think more advanced sewers may skip this pattern altogether for something with a little more pizazz.

I never considered making a bolero in sparkly fabric until I saw M6461. Now I think it is a brilliant idea and I may pull out one of the bolero patterns in my collection now and create a long sleeved version.

As much as I try and resist pieces that do not define my waist, I love the idea of showing off some of my new NY fabric with M6468. I love the larger version that scoops below the waist - I think this may be one of the first patterns I buy from this collection.

While M6469 is not for me, I think those who are attracted to empire waists may like the added details featured in this pattern. The different sleeve variations, as well as the option for layering on the shirt front and back.

This pattern made me laugh out loud. I wonder what video game they are trying to replicate without getting nailed for copyright infringement?

And finally... this quilt (M6482). THE OWLS ARE ADORABLE. Seriously love the little bits of argyle that have been added. I may need to learn how to quilt. Any tips on how to start this learning process would be greatly appreciated!

Sew Weekly Challenge: Musicals or "That Ol' Devil Moon Dress"

There was a summer when I was a young lass when all I did each day of summer vacation was watch Finian's Rainbow. Seriously. I already had a fondness for Fred Astaire movies, and I knew Petula Clark's songs, but this combined both of their talents and made me just the happiest camper. Eventually, Papa Grand intervened and told me to go out and play. But Father! I am learning about leprechauns and love on the riverbank and what credit is!

This song always stuck with me, and now that I'm older, I think my crush on the Woody Mahoney in this movie explains my current celeb crush on Jason Bateman.

For those of you who actually know the movie, I was originally planning on doing Sharon's laundry dress from her scene with Ogg the leprechaun. Then I remembered that I have a wedding on Saturday. A black tie wedding, no less, and I desperately wanted to make a dress for that. How could I combine both the Sew Weekly challenge and my own personal dress challenge? Easy: Black lace.

In this song, Sharon wraps herself in her black lace shawl (which made me desperately want a shawl at the time) around her lovely flowered dress. So I need lace and flowers and it needs to be fancy. Got it.

And here is the result:

Black satin dress with gold and black lace overlay on the bodice and sleeves. I used Simplicity 2444/Project Runway pattern and I cannot believe how well it turned out. Overall, this dress took me about seven hours, including cutting time. It came together like a dream! (And there are pockets. Everything I make from now on will have pockets because POCKETS ARE AMAZING.)

Normally, I would've been rocking my black satin pumps with this outfit, but these uber comfy flats worked much better with my crutches.

I chose to tie the sash in a small bow in the back so the front of the dress had more of a cummerbund look. It also cinched in my waist so I couldn't hit the buffet so hard (being on crutches also helped with that).

The lace overlay was surprisingly easy - I just flatlined to the satin and then used simulated French seams on the inside of the bodice so I did not have lace scratching me all night. I did not want to be the girl at the wedding who looks like she is dealing with a flea infestation. This is a fancy affair, y'all.

Here is the whole gang. Don't we look smashing? This may be the only time I ever see my friends this dressed up, and vice versa!

There was an insane amount of food. Truly. AND THEN THERE WAS THIS CREAMSICLE THINGY.

It was perfect. And it was on a stick.

The whole gang and the bride and groom. Love this picture. We've been playing bar trivia together for years now, and they are some truly fabulous (and smart) people.

It was a great night. My dress was right in line with the black cocktail dresses around me, and the lace gave it that extra touch of glamor I wanted. I'll definitely be making more versions of this pattern in the future!

I've got to say, it's times like these that make me so happy I can make my own clothes. Final cost of this dress: $38. The black and gold lace was already in my stash and ready for the perfect Steelers...I mean, Musical... cocktail dress.

...And The Adventure Comes To An End: The Pink Travelling Dress

Eventually, I had to come back to Chicago.

Here is my dress for the Think Pink Sew Weekly Challenge: Vogue 8489 with my lovely Juliet fabrics. The dark pink is some scrappage from the Doodles dress, and this fabulous paisley knit has been patiently waiting in my stash for some love.

I have a lovely backdrop.

Ah, moving... could there be a better way to convince people to throw things away? I think not.

Pardon the hair and the face - we had just arrived back from C-Land, and I was looking for items that I might need to survive the first few weeks of camping.

The paisley/flower print is a bit sheer, so I am wearing a slip underneath... but in order for the lace on the slip not to show through the neckline, I need to wear my vintage slip tube top. Which is pale pink. Winning.

I search frantically for my fabric and patterns! NOOOOOOO!

There are no fastenings on this dress, but I had to keep taking it in on the back seam to make sure it fit properly and there wasn't bagginess all around. It is taken in enough to make me feel like a circus performer when putting it on and taking it off. Voila! Meg appears.

Close up of the fabrics and tube top. I love the different shades of pink and the way the dress flows when I walk. It is incredibly comfortable! The hem is sketchy at best, which I can live with. Because it flows so greatly when I move, the hem doesn't lay still enough to attract attention.

This pattern was a breeze to put together. I am already plotting what version to make next, possibly with some of the fabulous prints I bought in NYC...

but before I can do that, there is a great deal of unpacking to be done. Hellooooo, weekend!

The NYC Adventure may have ended at LaGuardia...

...but the Cleveland Adventure was just beginning!

Off I flew in a baby plane towards the great state of Ohio, and I cannot tell you how glad I was that the plane was not full. Whipped my scarf off, claimed two seats, and proceeded to pass out. Total amount of sleep at the end of the flight: 4 hours.

I longed for a shower and bed, so off I went in a taxi to my hotel, the Holiday Inn Express in downtown Cleveland. I just want to take a moment to say that the two ladies at the front desk saved my life at least four times. First, they let me check in to my room seven hours early (OH KING SIZE BED, I LOVE YOU), they told me breakfast was still happening (bagel with peanut butter ... feeling stronger all the time), they found me a sewing kit when a groomsman knocked on my door an hour and a half before the wedding with a button emergency (no vests were harmed in the making of this wedding), and then they called me a taxi to get to said ceremony.

Where was Rob, you ask? Rob, who was supposed to meet me at the hotel to go to the wedding, was stuck in an elevator in our sublet. With our last load of items. Sooooo close to being done! He eventually showed up for the reception, and then we both crashed at the end of the night...

...but before we could sleep, we needed to celebrate!!

My fabulous friends, Becky and Alex, got married. And I cried three times during the ceremony.

The bride was stunning - seriously lovely and a complete trooper for getting married outside and not shivering in her dress!

The groom loves her so much that he used his vows to save her life from a bee.

They are truly one of the finest couples I know, and I couldn't be happier for them!

Well, you KNOW I had to make a new dress for this occasion, considering my lovely friend is a seamstress and all :)

I had snagged this fabric at a huge Hancock Fabrics sale, and I fell in love with the shiny purple plaid at first sight. I wanted to challenge myself a little bit more than usual and added piping to the armholes and neck edge.

Isn't she beautiful??

I needed something quick and simple since I still needed to finish my pink traveling dress, my Spanish Harlem dress, and the super secret dress for the NYC Adventure. I found New Look 6643 and it looked perfect.

If I couldn't line up the complete plaid on the sides, I tried to line up part of it. I like to tell myself it could be worse, considering I was sewing this before work each day.

Becky apparently disagrees. Either that or we are imitating fish.

When Rob finally arrived, I snagged him for this picture. What can I say? I love showing off my piping work.

This is what happens when you try to polka on a stress fracture. I LOVE polka and there was a polka band present. *sigh*

The leg situation is sad, but isn't the fabric pretty? I love shiny fabric. Love love love.

The final post of this wondrous adventure will hopefully be up tomorrow, and then I will show you the fabulous pink travelling dress. I know it's somewhere around here...

THE NYC MEETUP EXTRAVAGANZA

It was pretty much the greatest adventure EVER.

My day started at 3am (2:57am to be precise) when I woke up and leapt out of bed. THE DAY HAS FINALLY ARRIVED! I showered, put on my pink travelling dress (a future post to come on that), kissed the Robert goodbye and headed out to my cab. Farewell, sublet!

Fly to the great city of NYC, hop on an express bus to Manhattan, and land on the doorstep of Oonaballoona. OMG. When she and Debi opened the door, there may have been some screaming ... and by some, I mean I may have caused all the dogs in a four block radius to flip out.

When we finally calmed down and assembled our outfits and bags for the day (purchased from this seller at the Renegade Craft Fair - LOVE her Etsy shop), we headed over to El Centro for food and fun!

From left to right, we've got Vicki (who came into town for the meetup just like me - because we are HARDCORE), Daughter Fish (wearing the most beautiful outfit...my fingers were itching to touch her gorgeous cranberry skirt), Cindy (who made her dress in record time - and it was FABULOUS), the one and only Mena, that girl who I am going to put in my pocket, the other girl I am going to put in my other pocket, me, Lisette (there are no words- I was totally geeked about meeting her) and Nettie ( who is HILARIOUS). It was fabulous. There was definitely some hem flipping happening at the table while we examined our last minute work (or maybe that was just me...)

The lovely Lisette, Oona and Vicki having a laugh...and some chips...and some sangria. We are seamstresses, we make our own rules!

Mena's dress was a delight. I have that pattern and I fully plan on using it once I dig it out of whatever box it is in. I may even use staples when I make it :) Her flower was totally awesome because it is a Kate Spade flower, y'all.

Cindy was brilliant. At one point in Paron, she grabbed this AMAZING fabric (because she has excellent taste), got some cut off, and when the man tried to put it back, I was ran after him to get some for myself. That Cindy - she totally knows a good thing when she sees it, and who am I to resist?

The fantastic Marina joined up with us for our fabric journey, and I just adored her. (Have you checked out her blog? She is positively genius. So glad she didn't look closely at my topstitching!)

There was lots of walking involved... and LOTS of comments/questions/looks regarding our flowers. NYC men loved them... the women were like, What is this?

I spent most of the day walking behind Debi and trying to steal her Ness belt. I think she was onto me by the end of the day.

Puu met up with us to journey to Paron fabrics. OMG HER PANTS. It was love at first sight, truly :) When we got there, I followed her straight into the Annex and was met with a wonderous sight: 50% Off.

There was a pattern swap of epic proportions. Seriously. I think Debi was in heaven. I managed to snag a couple of fabulous 70's patterns and I cannot wait to make some flared pants!

Before we left Paron, Peter arrived. He is a fantastic source on sewing and fashion, and he hosts some great sew-alongs! (I swear I will finish my Negroni shirt someday...)

If you need any proof that we were, in fact, a most fantastic looking group, you need look no further than the picture below: Oona in her bombshell bodice and skirt, Daughter Fish in the MOST FANTASTIC COAT (my fingers itched to touch this as well, and she kindly permitted it), and Lisette in her gorgeous peacock dress (the hems on her sleeves were immaculate).

After all of the miserable weather we have been having in Chicago, the clouds parted and we had a beautiful day of sunshine and soft breezes. Nettie's shirt was closely examined by moi when she wasn't looking. It made me desperately wish that knits and I got along better.

This is one of my favorite pictures from the day. All their faces are glowing!

After several fabric stores, we definitely needed caffiene...or maybe that was just me. I got a chai tea and pretended it was as strong as coffee. Trying to give up my coffee habit is tough, y'all.

We definitely perked up after our trip to Dean and DeLuca! These ladies were ready to SHOP.

We stopped at more stores than I could ever remember, but this lovely one had some fabulous vintage notions that peaked the interest of Mena...

...and Debi. Debi ponders which belt buckle to get. Oh, Debi, just get them all and put them in your coat pockets for the plane ride home :)

Vicki manages to find a place to sit. Isn't her Pendrell fabulous? I adored the colors and I think she convinced me that I need to get my hands on that pattern.

I like to make faces, and Lisette tasted fabulous... like sunshine and unicorns.

In a swift move, Debi throws Vicki off of the seat and claims it as her own. What you don't see is that she stuck a Scottish flag in it first and shouted "I claim this for SCOTLAND." (The Ness belt is totally mocking me in this photo. Next time, Ness belt, next time...)

We finished out our amazing day at Room Service, where I ate a cone of pineapple chicken fried rice. Our waitress wore a teeny tiny hat and spilled Prosecco out of our glasses. I had something pink that contained pomegranate juice and sparkling wine...

and then Oona and I got into a drunken brawl, after which, I loved her all the more, but poor Sandy made the mistake of sitting between us. Sandy was awesome. I loved chatting with my fellow Ohioan about Ohio and all its Ohioness. Sandy: coffee soon, yes? (and by coffee, I mean tea. Let's do tea).

It's dark, but I swear Elizabeth and Vicki were having a great time. Elizabeth is the Queen of Kindness and Goodness: she offered me a place to rest my head for the night, which I will always be eternally grateful. I told her she needs to come to Chicago and stay with me, and then I'll come to NYC and stay with her...

Hang on, Sloopy, Sloopy, hang on...O! H! I! O!

The gorgeous Marina. She and I must hang out again, which means I need to go back to NYC. The next trip is definitely in the works, and maybe I'll stay longer than 21 hours :)

After the co-hosts super secret mission, the night ended with me sitting on Oona's floor with Oona and Debi and sipping the best cup of coffee I have ever had. Oh well! I gave up on the giving up of coffee. Coffee is amazing. I should not try to resist.

Eventually, I had to bid farewell to the Lovelies I had started the day with (with many hugs and promises to see each other again SOON) and head to the airport. After snagging an hour of sleep on the floor of LaGuardia (which isn't as terrible as you think because you've got a ton of fabric to cushion you), I hit up Au Bon Pain for some breakfast. Voila! Rosemary crackers from Oona (addicting) and grapes.

Before I went through security, I noticed a slight problem... It seemed I had bought too much fabric and needed to figure out how to stuff my suitcase and tote so everything would fit.

Suddenly, it dawned on me. While at 21 Century Fabrics, the owner quoted me one price on some fabulous material, which his wife then flipped out about. She kept yelling that it was scarf fabric. Scarf or no scarf, lady, I'm only giving you the $8 your hubbie quoted me or you get nothing at all! Eventually, I got the fabric for the $8 (so there, lady. Nyah.) ... and while at the airport, I used it as a scarf. All 4 yards of it. You can see the insanity below.

And when you take it off, it makes a lovely pseudo-blanket for the plane! Rick Steves would have been so proud.

Overall, the meetup was amazing. It was great to put names with faces, and I loved talking about our passion for sewing and fabric. Many thanks to Oona for putting the day and itinerary together, and many thanks to everyone who came! You are such inspirations to me, and I hope to run into you again soon :)

Blogging from the wilderness...

Friends, this past weekend was AMAZING. It was so amazing that it needs jazz hands to accompany the word "AMAZING" every time I talk about it...

Unfortunately, I cannot post pictures yet. My computer was broken in the move back into our apartment, and while I could use another computer, we do not have the Internet. My work computer encrypts everything that you put in it, so... I'm asking for your patience while I deal with some serious technical difficulties.

In the meantime, please entertain yourselves with a picture of me from our "campsite" that I snagged from Rob's facebook page:

No Internet, fridge, stove, microwave, cabinets, doors with handles, shelves, closets, floors (not including the carpet seen here - it is the only thing finished), SHOWER, light fixtures (we have two lamps and everything else is dangling from the ceiling), washer or dryer, hot water...

I like to call it "camping with an elevator."

I am hoping to park myself in another Starbucks tonight and blog about the wonderful people I met this weekend! These lovely friends kept me smiling long after I left NYC, and I cannot wait to share all the pictures I took. Many, many hugs to all who were there - I hope you all have as many wonderful memories as I do!

Ok, here's seven things about me you probably didn't know:

1. I was a seriously ugly baby. True story: My family and I were cleaning out my grandfather's house after he passed away and I happened upon a picture of a baby on one of the mantles. I pick it up and begin to ask my father who they horribly ugly baby was, the face was all smashed up, and sweet jeezus, look at that mess of hair. My father about peed himself. He said, with tears rolling down his cheeks, "That's you." That picture is now proudly displayed on my bookcase.

(This is not the photo, but you can see some of the craziness that was going on with my face).

2. I have been obsessed with the BBC Drama "North and South" for the last two weeks. No, not the one with Patrick Swayze - the one with Richard Armitage. The first time I saw it, I broke out into a sweat during the train scene.

3. I am crazy allergic to MSG. Before I eat something that I don't recognize, I have to check the label (so that rules out some potato chips, boxed potatoes, frozen meals, Ramen noodles, Chef Boy R Dee, etc). I'm careful in restaurants to avoid fish, peanut, and "special" sauces. If I happen to eat some, the resulting headache will occur based on the concentration I've consumed. I once tried a bite of my friend's Chinese food and it gave me a blinding migraine. I ended up on my bathroom floor in agony. It's an annoying allergy, but I work around it pretty well.

4. I grew up wanting to be a tornado chaser. If money hadn't been an issue (oh, in-state tuition, you big silly you), I may have tried to get into a meteorology program in Oklahoma. If this whole career in Human Resources doesn't pan out, I might just end up going in that direction.

5. I have a fear of escalators. I blame it on Rescue 911 (that show also had a tornado episode...interesting).

6. I may or may not be running the marathon ... my left leg is feeling pretty stabby, and I nearly wiped out today trying to run across the street. I get an "injury assessment" tomorrow, so let's hope it's not a stress fracture, shall we? I can live with missing the marathon, but not the Princess Half Marathon!

7. I love being on time or early for functions/get togethers/etc. My college professor said it best: "If you're early, you're on time. If you're on time, you're late. If you're late, don't bother coming in." I truly believe that and make every effort to be "on time" when I am going somewhere.

TWO DAYS!!!!

Holy wow oh jeeeez.

I've been randomly breaking out into laughter. Rob thinks I am crazy, but I am simply imagining all the insanity that is going to happen and the resulting joy. He totally gets it: I went to buy something (I didn't need) and he said, "That could be $10 you spend on fabric in NYC." *Boom* $10 goes back in my wallet. Love that man and his practical thinking :)

Sew Weekly Challenge: Autumn Palette or "The Epic Meltdown Pants"

This is the tale of the pants that almost weren't.

I knew I wanted to make red pants for the Autumn, and after seeing all the famous ladies running around in their purchased versions, I was sold. These pants needed to happen. I grabbed McCalls 3935 and got to cutting on some fabulous red cotton canvas from the stash. Eventually the pants were finished aside from the hook and bar. I tried them on and saw that there was a major gap in the back. So, I took apart the waistband and started stitching and trimming. TRAGEDY STRUCK. I was taking in and cutting out the excess... in a side seam. Not in the back. I did not check to see what seam I was working on.

Of course, I FLIP OUT. Rob was completely beside himself, trying to offer me suggestions of how I might be able to fix it, while I could only focus on the fact THAT I DIDN'T CHECK THE SEAM FIRST.

(Insert epic meltdown here)

Eventually, I calmed down enough to use one of Rob's suggestions: Insert panels in the side to make up for what was cut out.

Both side seams now have triangular inserts that add the necessary inches so I can wear these pants without crying.

I cannot express in words how glad I am that these pants were not a fail. I love them so much, and I'm glad I added the belt carriers the second time around. The black belt on the red fabric is pretty striking to my eye.

I wore this outfit last night to a party, but didn't get any pictures there. I blame the three bottles of sangria.

Since I'm trying to complete as many projects as I can before we move back into our apartment (IN FIVE DAYS OMGCANNOTWAIT), I whipped this cardigan up in two hours. I've had this fabulous multicolor knit in my stash for some time and I knew I wanted to wear it in cardigan form during Autumn. Hello, NESA project!

It's McCalls 6408, and while I didn't have enough fabric to make it longer or add the ties, I really love the look of it when I wrap it around me like so:

I didn't hem the sleeves (it's the weekend and I was feeling lazy), so I just rolled them up. Voila!

It's been a little crazy the last few days. I've been working on four dresses, along with the pants and cardigan, that I am trying to finish before the move/New York. I don't know the status of the renovations in our apartment, if they are going to be done in the next five days or if I will even have a place to set up a sewing table. I wanted to get as much done for the next several challenges as possible, and it looks like I might be caught up for the next three weeks! Hooray!

Sew Weekly Challenge: Great Gatsby or "Better Luck Next Time, G"

Friends, I would like to begin this post with something I like.

In the past week, I've done several "pick me up projects" - just to get my mind off of the AWFUL top I made for the Gatsby challenge.

I made this fabulous Sorbetto on Monday (because I just cannot get enough of that fabulous pattern). This Sorbetto was originally this skirt here. Which was a pillowcase before that. I definitely prefer it as this top. The skirt was getting all twisted and weird when I walked, so it was getting neglected in the closet. I decided to remake it once again, and now it's my first garment for FESA! It's fabulous for layering, and I have been wearing it all week.

Ok, let's talk about my Gatsby creations. When I first saw the challenge, I knew I was going more along the inspiration route since I don't possess any vintage patterns from that time period. My first stop in these situations is BurdaStyle, because the patterns are cheap, I can print them from home, and in the past, I've gotten great results.

I started with this pattern, the short sleeve blouse:

I thought the flutter sleeves, peplum, and buttons with loops fit the time period well, so I settled on this for the top. For the skirt, I fell in love with the front pleated skirt and knew it had to be mine. The yoke is similar to those seen in the 1920s and 1930s. Theoretically, these pieces were supposed to go together.

Well...they didn't end up going together very well.

The blouse was a HUGE disappointment. I probably spent 8-10 hours on this shirt, which seems a little excessive to me. The pattern called for silk, and I used a silk blend, so I don't think my fabric was the issue.

When I finished the blouse for the first time, and put it on, it was enormous. The sheer amount of blousiness in the front and the back made me look like a football player who hadn't taken their gear off. It fit in the waist where the peplum begins, but I am convinced I could have fit two ten pound pumpkins in the top portion.

In order to reduce the amount of fabric in the front and back, I created two bust darts in the front. At their thickest points, they take in four inches of fabric. To deal with some of the excess in the back, I took it in under the sleeves (again, four inches at the thickest point).

I added red buttons because this blouse was meant to go with the red pleated skirt and they were available in my stash.

The blouse gaps terribly at the top and I think I'll need to find a way to keep the left front stabilized when the buttons are buttoned.

You can tell by my face how pleased these ideas make me.

Now, for the part of the Gatsby challenge I like...

In addition to the front pleated skirt, I made a camisole from the Colette Cinnamon pattern out of some fabulous pinstripe fabric I had in my stash. This was another "pick me up" project to get my mind off of the yellow Gatsby top above.

The skirt is gorgeous wine colored satin. LOVE.

I love the skirt with a hearty passion. This satin had been in my stash for quite some time and I was reluctant to use it for this skirt, but I am so glad I did! Now if I could iron out some of the folds that ran down the middle of the fabric, I would be perfectly happy.

I had to use a zipper in the camisole, but I love the way it turned out. You cannot really tell from these pictures, but the stripes lined up pretty well! It's comfortable and works well under a jacket for work.

I may just spin in this skirt all the time. Or take a salsa dancing class. That would be FABULOUS.

While I love the skirt, camisole, and Sorbetto, these are all shadowed by the disappointment in the shirt. I was able to finish three other projects in half of the time it took for the shirt, and I don't know if I should attempt to save the shirt or not.

Sew Weekly Challenge: To Dye For or "The Doodles Dress"

This might just be my most favorite creation ever.

I've been holding onto this fabric for about a year now, ever since my lovely friend Juliet sent it to me. I was searching for the right pattern when I came across Simplicity 2219 during a Hancock Fabrics $1 Simplicity Pattern sale. Yes, please!!!

Almost from the moment I started sewing this, I envisioned myself strutting off the plane in New York in my black boots and big 'ol sunglasses. Knit fabrics + not being all wrinkletastic on the plane = winning.

My favorite part of the whole dress, without a doubt, is the front bodice. For this challenge, I knew I wanted to paint on fabric since dyeing clothes still scares me a little. I cut out all the bodice pieces and painted on the front full bodice piece. I just doodled until I liked it and considered it "done." Once the paint dried, I stitched the bodice together. My high school notebooks are filled with doodles like this - I like unpredictable curves and dots.

The side bodice pieces are gathered where they meet the front and back bodices. I love the extra bit of detail this adds to the dress and how it draws the eye back to the doodles.

I'm also a big fan of not hemming things. I didn't hem the skirt or the sleeves and the fabric is not fraying at all! Yay!

The skirt is gathered both in the center of the front and the back. A strip of 1/4 inch elastic is encased where the bodice and skirt meet, making for a snug fit that required no zippers or buttons.

This is not a picture of the ceiling falling on me. It's me doing my version of the "Party Girl" move from my cardio dance class. From the look of it, I am partying hard!

I also got my hair cut. I am so glad to have actual bangs again! (My head also feels 18x lighter than before. I am sure this will knock a full minute off my running pace.)

I absolutely love the end result of this project! When I was little, puffy paint was all the rage and I was worried that this project might reflect my younger obsession with the stuff. Instead, it has fueled a grown obsession with fabric paint ... it may start sneaking into more projects soon...

So...eight days into this journal project and I am still going strong. (We'll pretend like I didn't write six of those entries at one time, K? K.)

Yesterday's entry called for me to name my inner critic. I was being encouraged to talk to myself, and I do that plenty, so I might as well give my inner, petulant self a name. It only makes sense.

I named my inner critic Hetty King.

It was either that or Rachel Lynde... but I actually know people named Rachel and didn't want to be rejecting them in my head all the time. It makes for unhealthy real life relationships, I think.

I decided to try out this whole idea during my run yesterday. Marathon training has about hit the peak - I run 18 miles on Saturday and 20 miles next Sunday. Then my runs taper until the marathon. (OMG IT IS ONE MONTH FROM TOMORROW). My mid week runs have gotten longer too, which meant I was due to run 9 miles last night ... this after working all day and only sleeping for five hours the night before. As soon as I head to the gym and hop on the treadmill, Hetty kicks in. "You could be done with this in five minutes if you just hop on the bike over there." "Is that your knee hurting?" "Why is your toe asleep? Is it asleep? Maybe you should check on that..." "You need more GU."

To each of these I responded, "Hetty, SHUT UP. We are FINE."

I was shocked - it actually worked! It was probably one of the best runs I have had in a really long time. The voice made me want to go faster, push harder, and I did splendidly. Treating my inner critic like an unhealthy friendship allowed me to reject my own negativity without talking down to myself.

Have you ever thought about naming your inner critic?? I highly encourage it!

It's Like Sarah Is In My Brain...But Not In A Creepy, Zombie Way

That Sarah over at Rhinestones and Telephones...she is one persuasive cookie.

I wasn't too sure if I should try my hand at the Sorbetto pattern, and then she was like, SHABAM.

I just learned how to knit, and of course, would like to run before I learn how to walk, and I am certain she picked up on this. That's why she is co-hosting a Newbie Knit Along for a most gorgeous sweater. I was still resisting her crafty powers ... right up until I bought my yarn and needles last night. (But the yarn is so PRETTY. I feel like I am hugging an Alpaca.)

The final straw though, was when Sarah, with assistance from the Chicago weather, convinced me that I needed to do the Fall Essentials Sew Along.

See? It's like she is poking around in my brain.

Now, I can't be as awesome as Sarah and have a palette that is so lush and gorgeous, but I can live with that. I am trying to bust through the last remaining pieces of my stash that I kept out of storage. I have one more month to use up the majority and this Sew-Along will definitely give me motivation to sew like a fiend! The Chicago weather suddenly dropping twenty degrees is a good motivator as well... since most of my warm clothes ARE STILL IN STORAGE (22 days til I am reunited with my things...but who is counting???). I need pants and tops and layers asap.

So, while I am ruffling through my fabric and patterns and making a Grand Game Plan, why not pop over to Rhinestones and Telephones and tell the lovely Sarah Happy Birthday??? And send her a cookie... or an embarrassing story of yourself to make her smile.
